with Discounts and Freebies

Overview:

For households who plant a minimum number of trees, with the type or species of the tree to be pre-defined by the government of San Juan City, the city government will provide monetary incentives.  The city will provide an “incentives card” which will entitle the tree-planting households to discounts on real estate tax, discounts on government services (for example, cedula, requests for certified true copies of documents, etc.), and other government fees.  The discount privilege is good for one year, to encourage yearly planting. The income that the city government will forego because of the discounts it will extend to the residents who plant trees, will be worth it, because the impact will benefit the city even in the long-term.  This strategy will entail effort and action not only from the San Juaneros, or Barangay Sta. Lucia residents, but also from the City government and Barangay. With concerted efforts, the chances of success is greater. The government also has to actively promote and communicate the project, for it to gain traction and achieve success.

Specific Strategies:

This is how it may operate:

unnamed

  1. The city will provide an “incentives card” which will entitle the tree-planting household to discounts on real estate tax, discounts on government services (for example, cedula, requests for certified true copies of documents, etc.), and other government fees.  The discount privilege is good for one year.
  2. The Barangay officials will issue a certification after inspecting and validating that the tree seedlings were actually planted within the household’s property (backyard, garden, front yard) in Barangay Sta. Lucia, or any other qualified areas in San Juan City.
  3. The Barangay will also issue a list of qualified types or species of trees, which it will have to determine to be appropriate to the soil type, climate, rainfall, height, time to grow or mature, and even available open space in the Barangay, as well as the cost of the tree seedling, and required maintenance efforts and maintenance expense.
  4. Based on research, trees have to be planted the right way.  Furthermore, certain species are not recommended to be favorable to the environment, particularly mahogany, which prevent native trees that face extinction (narra, for example) from growing and mahogany chokes out other plants.  Likewise not recommended are rubber and gemelina, which are fast-growing but less adaptive to the Philippine environment . There are certain species of trees that are highly recommended for planting, and these include, among others:  ilang-ilang (Canaga odorata), kalumpang (Sterculia foetida), kamagong (Diospyros blancoi), lumbang (Aleurites moluccana), malugay (Pometia pinnata), pili (Canarium ovatum), sampaloc (Tamarindus indica), caimito (Chrysophyllum cainito), guyabano (anona muricata), avocado (persea americana), anonas (anona reticulata), and narra.
  5. The income that the city government will lose because of the discounts it will extend to the residents who plant trees, will be worth it, because the impact will benefit the city even in the long-term.

Project: Make Room

by Leon Chua

Vision

Our vision is to create more ecosystems (that would be heavily guarded) to boost biodiversity in San Juan. Project: Make room aims to create green spaces amongst the busy city for wildlife and plant life alike to thrive. We aim to help the coexistence of man and the environment by creating parks for people to visit, relax and exercise amongst other activities. This would help people get in touch with nature. It would increase air quality, reduce heat buildup, improvement of mental and physical health among citizens, reduction of greenhouse gasses and to help with stormwater management for the city

As a city we will:

  • Create a diverse ecosystem that can benefit the city greatly
    • increase air quality
    • reduce heat buildup
    • improvement of mental and physical health
    • reduction of greenhouse gasses
    • stormwater management
  • Protect and care for this environment
    • Place Street lights
    • Have guards active in the area
    • Placement of CCTV cameras
    • Multiple trash cans to reduce littering and promote segregation
    • Hire janitors
    • Having things like bird baths to help to environment thrive
    • Application of the Anti-littering law
    • Application of Republic Act no.8485 and Republic Act no.10631

Green City San Juan

by AJ Chua

Strategies and information:

1)Adopting ParksIMG-6021.GIF
Adopting parks specifically what the community or the people can do is to make parks for an example is to plant trees around the park or create water ponds to plant things in it instead of building new government offices why not build parks so that the environment can be diverse. Accoring to the site I’ve found youth service America is that “Adopt a local park or greenspace area near your school, and coordinate with the parks management to plant and maintain a section of the park.” Since parks are actually good for the environment to create more green space in the city.

2)Alternative Energy Sourcesdownload
Energy sources are like water and electricity instead of relaying from meralco and Manila water we can just Can an alternative. For electricity is to use solar panels this material maybe expensive but it can save you for a lot of money since Philippines is in the equator it very near the sun which is good since solar panels use sunlight for them to creat electricity. For water since there are many good water filter techniques but the best is to leave it in the sun for a lot of hours or just build a water filter just like in Xavier school where they filter water to conserve water.

3)Bird Houses0.png
Birds are usually just around flying no home and no one knows what would happen to the birds so building bird houses can help the birds live better since most birds are considered endangered in the philippines since hunters would normally kill them and also according to Youth service America is that “Study the habitats and nesting needs of birds. Construct and maintain nesting stations for birds on the school campus or in the neighborhood.”

4)Bring Your Own Bagdownload-1
I know that there a lot of cities promoting this by not using straws, cup covers and charging people for plastic bags. So the difference that I would want to do is to like instead of like something similar to the one that the youth service America did which was “Create a campaign to educate and encourage community members to use reusable grocery bags instead.” Instead of promoting it why not enforce it make a requirement so that we can save the environment like for stores to ban the giving of plastic bags so that we can recycle our old ones.

5)Reusing Fruit Wastedownload-2
Most have done this by putting signs in Filipino “nabubulok” and “dinabubulok” which translates to Rotten and does not get rotten but my ideas is much more useful you see instead of throwing it out you can use those fruit waste for good for an example my last years IP was “reusing lemon peeling as fertilizer for tomato plants” which is to use it as fertilizer since it does make the plant grow faster how much faster 3 cm taller which could plant plants faster.

6)Car Bandownload-3
In some countries such as Africa started doing this which is basically where they ban cars for at least once in a month to prevent pollution but San Juan City did something else which is basically a smoke ban which has an effect but if they would ban cars for a day it would have a better effect. Also since most cars actually create the smoke in the air just like when I was passing by the road buses and jeepneys had so much smoke that it was just black.

Socially Aware San Juan

by Keith Wongchuking

Some strategies that I have in mind is using social media. I believe that the best way you could change anything is through the youth. This is because they are the future. Therefore whatever they believe in is what will be carry on in the future. Today social media has been a huge impact. Especially to teenagers. If information spreads in social media, it will spread throughout the globe. Information can go viral in the internet in a snap of a finger. I myself should also show as an example to the people. That me myself follow the laws and respect them. I believe that through following the laws, our city will be the safest. To create a safe San Juan, we have to report everything suspicious around us. Keeping the place safe is the biggest priority.

Creating Facebook pages, Instagram pages and websites are good idea for publicity. It will showcase what we should do to save our respective Barangays and why we should do it. The website could contain how you could help your own Barangay in your own way. No matter what’s your age, you can always make a difference. Young kids could do simple stuff to help their Barangay. Such as helping the elderly walk, throwing waste in the right place, watering the plants in the area, etc. It will contain a guide that people have to focus on to improve their Barangay. It will display the importance of discipline and show how it will help the progress of the city.
